Dubious benefits and potential risks of soy phytoestrogens
In response
to the article "Lack of significant hormonal effects and controlled
trials of phytoestrogens" by Jean Ginsburg and Gordana M Prelevic
(Lancet 2000, 355: 163-164), Professor Cesare Sirtori noted
the following (Lancet 2000, 355: 819):
"...at the
third international symposium on the role of soy in preventing and
treating chronic disease disturbing data were presented on the
potential mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic properties of
phytoestrogens."
"...to say
that phytoestrogens are critical in raising menopausal age and lowering
breast cancer risk in menopausal women in oriental women is
superficial."
"Ginsburg
and Prelevic should be credited for drawing attention to the potential
dangers of an unregulated distribution of poorly studied products",
